here's something i've been working on the last couple of days. i gutted an old combination record player/8-track player/radio and made a stringed instrument out of it. The 8-track player & radio still work. I've tuned it to more or less sitar tuning, even though it doesn't have the "right" amount of strings for that. It has 6 sympathetic strings and 5 primary ones. This will probably sound a lot better once I get the mizrabs. Also I can bow it, though i'm still working on getting it to sound better when I do.
Solmania was this Japanese band (guy? I guess) who made huge, homemade stringed instruments a lot like yours, there.
I have a picture of him in a magazine that shows him playing this ungodly two-necked deal, with wires and gizmos in all the wrong places and everything. He says in the enclosed interview that when playing the thing at home, his neighbor complained to him; "Knock off the airplane noises."
Haven't actually heard anything by him, but wouldn't mind, after all that, you know?
there was a grand piano curb-discarded a while ago outside of this mansion near the posh part of the beach-town here.. ..the keys were all stuck, but i so wanted to salvage the strings and make some sort of harp-board-cicord-carina. hopefully i'll find another junkpiano, and plans shall come to fruition!
+&: i've readied a few tapes for you from recent soundproject, willprobably send soonly. wondering if you could maybe release the laundromat one, possibly another, wondering what i'd have to pay you for that, details details etc?
do you mean for the compilation LP, or something else? Either way you don't have to pay, I am indebted to you!
me and some friends once tried to get the string section from a piano at the dump. after removing some huge screws with the flat end of a tire iron, we discovered it was impossible to keep them intact and separate from the frame.
going to wait till i get the mizrabs before posting audio files of the stringthing... it should sound best with those.
That's really awesome... so the concept is that the strings reverberate along with the sound from the 8-track? I can only imagine what would happen if you made a looping 8-track and then used it to record the sounds coming from the guitar!
